Russia's first wholly new heavy-lift launch vehicle family designed since the Soviet collapse, using modular kerosene-fueled Universal Rocket Modules that can be combined for light, medium or heavy configurations. Developed partly to free Russia from launching its heaviest payloads from the leased Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, since Angara can fly from Russia's own Plesetsk and Vostochny cosmodromes.
