Spirit was a NASA Mars robotic rover active from 2004 to 2010, operating for 2,208 sols, about six years and 77 days. It was one of two rovers in NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission and landed in Gusev Crater on January 4, 2004, before traveling 7.73 kilometers across the Martian surface. It far exceeded its planned 90-sol mission before becoming stuck in soft sand in 2009. The rover was built by NASA contractor Boeing.
