Space Shuttle Challenger was a Space Shuttle orbiter built by Rockwell International and operated by NASA, named after HMS Challenger, a nineteenth-century research vessel. It was the second orbiter to fly, launching in April 1983, and completed ten missions over three years of operation before being destroyed in January 1986 soon after launch, killing all seven crew members aboard.
