Sojourner was a robotic rover that reached Mars on July 4, 1997, as part of the Mars Pathfinder mission, and operated for 92 sols, about 95 Earth days. It was the first wheeled vehicle to operate on an astronomical object other than Earth or the Moon, carrying front and rear cameras and instruments to study rocks and soil at the Ares Vallis landing site. It was developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and launched aboard a Delta II rocket built by McDonnell Douglas.
