A European Space Agency probe built by Astrium, launched in March 2004 to conduct a detailed study of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. It rendezvoused with the comet in 2014, became the first spacecraft to orbit a comet nucleus, and released its companion lander Philae for the first controlled touchdown on a comet's surface. The mission concluded in September 2016 with a deliberate hard landing on the comet.
