A NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory space probe, the fourth in the Mariner series, launched in November 1964 to perform the first successful flyby of Mars in July 1965. It returned the first close-up images ever taken of another planet from deep space, showing a cratered, apparently lifeless surface that reshaped scientific understanding of Mars.
