Hayabusa2 is a Japanese asteroid sample-return spacecraft built and operated by JAXA. Launched in December 2014, it traveled to the near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, deployed small rovers and a lander onto its surface, fired a projectile to expose subsurface material, and collected two separate samples before its return capsule landed in Australia in December 2020. Its name means peregrine falcon two in Japanese, continuing the original Hayabusa mission that returned the first ever asteroid samples in 2010.
