Galileo was an American robotic space probe that studied Jupiter and its moons, as well as the asteroids Gaspra and Ida. It consisted of an orbiter and an atmospheric entry probe, and became the first spacecraft to orbit an outer planet after arriving at Jupiter on December 7, 1995, following gravity-assist flybys of Venus and Earth. It was built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm providing the propulsion module and Hughes Aircraft Company building the atmospheric probe.
