Electron is a two-stage, expendable small-lift orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by Rocket Lab. It debuted with a test flight in May 2017 from the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand and reached its first fully successful orbital launch in January 2018, powered by nine electric-pump-fed Rutherford engines on its first stage, the first orbital-class rocket to use that engine technology. Electron has since launched from sites in New Zealand and the United States and has demonstrated first-stage ocean recovery.
