The Apollo command and service module, or CSM, was one of two principal components of the Apollo spacecraft used in the Apollo program, which landed twelve astronauts on the Moon between 1969 and 1972. It functioned as a mother ship, carrying a crew of three astronauts and the Apollo Lunar Module to lunar orbit before returning the crew to Earth, and consisted of a conical command module serving as the crew cabin and a cylindrical service module providing propulsion and power. It was built by North American Aviation.
