Soviet aerospace engineer and chief designer of the OKB-52 design bureau, a major rival to Korolev's and Yangel's bureaus within the Soviet space program. He developed the Proton rocket, which remained a workhorse Soviet and Russian heavy launch vehicle for decades, and led the military Almaz space station program, part of which was disguised as the civilian Salyut program.
