Hermann Noordung was the pseudonym of Herman Potocnik, a Slovene-Austrian engineer and retired Austro-Hungarian army officer who in his 1928 book The Problem of Space Travel: The Rocket Motor provided the first technically detailed design for a rotating space station intended to generate artificial gravity through centrifugal force. His proposed station, which he called the Wohnrad or 'living wheel,' was a wheel- or torus-shaped structure roughly 30 meters in diameter that would spin to simulate gravity for its occupants, accompanied by around a hundred of his own detailed engineering drawings and calculations covering its life support, power generation via solar mirrors, and orbital positioning in what is now recognized as an early description of a geostationary orbit. Though earlier theorists including Konstantin Tsiolkovsky had discussed orbital habitats in general terms, Potocnik's book was the first to work through the engineering specifics in such depth, and his design strongly influenced later space station concepts, including Wernher von Braun's widely publicized 1950s proposals. He died in 1929, shortly after the book's publication, without seeing his ideas gain wider recognition.
