Soviet rocket engineer and one of Sergei Korolev's closest deputies, responsible for the guidance and control systems on the R-7 rocket family, Sputnik, and the early crewed Vostok and Voskhod programs. He later served as deputy chief designer on the Energia-Buran program and, after retirement, wrote the four-volume memoir Rockets and People, a primary historical source on the Soviet space program.
