Polish-born engineer who settled in the Soviet Union and became one of the twentieth century's foundational theorists of astronautics. His 1937 book Introduction to Cosmonautics worked out multi-impulse orbital transfer trajectories and other concepts that anticipated later spaceflight practice, and he is credited with coining the term cosmonautics itself.
