Israel's only professional astronomical observatory, owned and operated by Tel Aviv University, located in the Negev desert near the town of Mitzpe Ramon. Founded in October 1971 as a collaboration between Tel Aviv University and the Smithsonian Institution, it serves mainly staff and graduate students of the university's astronomy, astrophysics and geophysics programs.
