The astronomical research institute of Moscow State University, established in 1931 on the site of an earlier university observatory founded in 1831, and named for astronomer Pavel Karlovich Shternberg. Known in Russian by the acronym GAISh, it is one of Russia's principal centers for astronomical research, and the main-belt asteroid 14789 GAISh, discovered in 1969 by Lyudmila Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, was named in its honor.
