An astronomical observatory about 35 kilometers southeast of Prague in the Czech Republic, founded in 1898 as a private facility by amateur astronomer Josef Jan Fric and donated to the Czechoslovak state in 1928 to mark the country's tenth anniversary of independence. Now run by the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, it houses the largest telescope in the country, a 2-meter instrument added in 1967 that ranked seventh-largest in the world at the time, and it has discovered more than 700 minor planets.
