Brazil's national astronomical and geophysical research institute, founded by Emperor Pedro I in Rio de Janeiro on 15 October 1827, one of the oldest scientific institutions in the country. It maintains Brazil's official civil time standard and conducts research in astronomy, astrophysics and geophysics; since 1980 it has operated a 1.6-meter telescope at its Pico dos Dias Observatory site in Brasopolis, Minas Gerais, and Albert Einstein visited the institution during his 1925 stay in Brazil.
