An observatory of the University of Texas atop Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains of West Texas, opened in 1939 and funded by a bequest from banker William Johnson McDonald. Its dark West Texas skies and Hobby-Eberly Telescope have made it a major site for spectroscopic surveys.
