A thirteenth-century Persian observatory founded around 1259 near Maragheh under the patronage of the Mongol Ilkhanid ruler Hulagu Khan, directed by the astronomer Nasir al-Din al-Tusi. It housed a major library and a team of astronomers from across the Islamic world and China, and its instruments influenced later observatory design in both the Islamic world and Europe.
