A German astrophysics research institute in Potsdam-Babelsberg near Berlin, formed in 1992 after German reunification as the successor to the Berlin Observatory, founded in 1700, and the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam, founded in 1874 as the world's first observatory dedicated explicitly to astrophysics. The Berlin Observatory's astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovered the planet Neptune in 1846, and the institute's grounds include the Einstein Tower, a solar observatory built between 1921 and 1924 to test Einstein's general theory of relativity.
