The largest of five monumental masonry observatories built across northern India in the early eighteenth century by the Rajput king and astronomer Jai Singh II, combining giant sundials, astrolabes and instruments for tracking the positions of celestial bodies with the naked eye. Its Jaipur site remains the best preserved of the five and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
