The astronomical observatory of the University of Hamburg in Germany, founded by the city of Hamburg in 1825 and rebuilt at its present site in the Bergedorf district in 1912; the university has owned and operated it since 1968. Astronomer Walter Baade discovered the large near-Earth asteroid 1036 Ganymed there on 23 October 1924, and the observatory's instruments include a 1-meter reflector that achieved first light in 1911 and a historic 60-centimeter Great Refractor.
