A NASA gamma-ray space telescope launched in 1991 as the second of the agency's four Great Observatories, named for the physicist Arthur Holly Compton. It discovered gamma-ray bursts occurring in every direction of the sky rather than concentrated in the Milky Way, reshaping understanding of these brief, enormously energetic explosions, before being deliberately deorbited in 2000.
