A major optical observatory in the foothills of the Chilean Andes, operated since 1967 as a US-Chilean partnership and prized for exceptionally clear, dry skies. Its Victor M. Blanco Telescope hosted the Dark Energy Camera used in the Dark Energy Survey of the southern sky.
