A Prussian and later German state observatory founded in Berlin in 1700, famous for the 1846 discovery of the planet Neptune there by Johann Gottfried Galle, working from calculations by the French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier. Its historic instruments and functions were dispersed among several successor institutions across the twentieth century.
