A Ming and Qing dynasty astronomical observatory in Beijing, built in 1442 and still holding a set of large bronze instruments cast under Jesuit and Chinese court astronomers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including an armillary sphere and a celestial globe. It is among the oldest surviving purpose-built observatories anywhere in the world.
