A 3.9-meter optical telescope at Siding Spring Observatory in New South Wales, completed in 1974 as a joint project of the United Kingdom and Australia and long the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been used for major spectroscopic sky surveys including the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, which mapped the large-scale structure of the universe.
