India's first interplanetary mission, an ISRO robotic orbiter known informally as Mangalyaan, launched on 5 November 2013 and inserted into Mars orbit on 24 September 2014. The mission made India the fourth space agency to reach Mars and the first to succeed on its maiden attempt, using indigenously developed propulsion and a low-cost design; it operated for roughly eight years, far exceeding its planned six-to-ten-month lifetime, before ISRO declared it non-recoverable in September 2022 after an extended eclipse drained its battery.
