Artemis I, launched by NASA on November 16, 2022, was an uncrewed Moon orbiting mission and the first major spaceflight of the Artemis program, marking the agency's return to lunar exploration after the Apollo program ended nearly five decades earlier. The Orion capsule carried instrumented mannequins rather than a human crew, and splashed down west of Baja California near Guadalupe Island on December 11, 2022, where it was recovered by the USS Portland.
