Apollo 9, launched by NASA on March 3, 1969, was the third crewed spaceflight in the Apollo program and successfully tested systems and procedures critical to a lunar landing, including the first crewed flight of the Apollo Lunar Module, in Earth orbit. Commanded by James McDivitt with Command Module Pilot David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot Russell Schweickart, the mission lasted ten days before splashing down in the North Atlantic Ocean on March 13, 1969.
