Apollo 7 was the first crewed flight in NASA's Apollo program, launched October 11, 1968, and saw the resumption of American human spaceflight after the fire that killed the three Apollo 1 astronauts during a launch rehearsal test in January 1967. Commanded by Walter Schirra with Command Module Pilot Donn Eisele and Lunar Module Pilot Walter Cunningham, the eleven day flight tested the Apollo command and service module in Earth orbit. Despite tension between the crew and ground controllers, the mission was a complete technical success, giving NASA the confidence to send Apollo 8 into orbit around the Moon two months later.
