The Veil Nebula is a large cloud of heated, ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus, the visible remnant of a massive star that exploded as a supernova roughly 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The expanding shock wave from that explosion continues to sweep up and energize the surrounding interstellar material, producing the delicate, filamentary structure that gives the nebula its name.
