The Tarantula Nebula, also known as 30 Doradus, is a large H II region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, forming its south-east corner as seen from Earth. It is named for the arrangement of its bright, glowing gas filaments and dusty tendrils, which resemble the legs of a tarantula, and lies about 160,000 light-years away.
