Regulus is the brightest object in the constellation Leo and one of the brightest stars in the night sky, carrying the Bayer designation Alpha Leonis. It appears to the eye as a single point of light but is actually a quadruple star system made up of two pairs of stars, the whole system lying about 79 light-years from the Solar System.
