The Omega Nebula, catalogued as Messier 17 and also known as the Swan Nebula, the Checkmark Nebula, the Lobster Nebula, and the Horseshoe Nebula, is an H II star-forming region in the constellation Sagittarius. It was discovered by the Swiss astronomer Philippe Loys de Cheseaux in 1745 and catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764, and it sits among some of the richest starfields of the Milky Way in that part of the sky.
