Mizar is a second-magnitude star in the handle of the Big Dipper asterism, in the constellation Ursa Major, carrying the Bayer designation Zeta Ursae Majoris. It forms a well-known naked-eye double star with the fainter star Alcor and is itself a quadruple star system, with the whole grouping lying about 83 light-years from the Sun and belonging to the Ursa Major Moving Group of stars that share a common origin and motion through space.
