Messier 85, also known as M85 or NGC 4382, is a lenticular galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices, discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1781. It is the northernmost member of the Virgo Cluster included in Charles Messier's catalogue, lies roughly 60 million light-years from Earth, and shows a shell-like structure in its outer regions thought to be the result of a past merger or interaction with a companion galaxy.
