Messier 34, also known as M34, is a large, relatively nearby open cluster of stars in the constellation Perseus. It was probably first observed by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna before 1654 and was included by Charles Messier in his catalogue of comet-like objects in 1764, who described it as a cluster of small stars resolvable in an ordinary telescope.
