The Lagoon Nebula, catalogued as Messier 8, is a giant emission nebula and H II star-forming region in the constellation Sagittarius. It was discovered by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Hodierna in 1654 and is one of only two star-forming nebulae faintly visible to the naked eye from mid-northern latitudes, making it a frequent target for both amateur observers and professional study of stellar birth.
