Gonggong is a dwarf planet candidate and member of the scattered disc beyond Neptune, following a highly eccentric and inclined orbit that carries it between about 33 and 101 astronomical units from the Sun. It moves in a 3:10 orbital resonance with Neptune, completing three orbits of the Sun for every ten that Neptune completes, and it was discovered in July 2007 by the American astronomers Megan Schwamb, Michael Brown, and David Rabinowitz at Palomar Observatory, with the discovery announced in January 2009.
