Chariklo, formally designated 10199 Chariklo, is a ringed centaur, a small body orbiting the Sun between Saturn and Uranus, and the largest centaur known, with a diameter of about 250 kilometers and an orbital period of 62.5 years. It was discovered on 15 February 1997 by the University of Arizona's Spacewatch project at Kitt Peak National Observatory, and its dark, reddish surface is made up of water ice, silicate minerals, amorphous carbon, and complex organic compounds; in 2013 astronomers found it to be encircled by two dense, narrow rings, the first rings ever confirmed around a body of its kind.
