Caldwell 5, also known as IC 342 or the Hidden Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Camelopardalis, discovered by the British astronomer William Frederick Denning in 1892. It lies close to the plane of the Milky Way, so its light is heavily obscured and dimmed by intervening gas and dust, which is why an otherwise large, relatively nearby galaxy some 7 to 11 million light-years away remains a difficult and rarely observed target.
