Caldwell 31, also known as the Flaming Star Nebula or IC 405, is an emission and reflection nebula in the constellation Auriga, first photographed around 1892 by the American astronomer Sherburne Wesley Burnham. It lies roughly 1,500 light-years from Earth and is illuminated chiefly by the irregular variable star AE Aurigae, a runaway star that appears to have been ejected from the Orion Nebula region.
