Caldwell 23, also known as NGC 891, is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Andromeda seen almost exactly edge-on, discovered by William Herschel in 1784. It lies roughly 30 million light-years from Earth and is bisected by a prominent, dark dust lane running the length of its disk, often compared in structure and size to the Milky Way.
