Caldwell 21, also known as NGC 4449, is an irregular, Magellanic-type galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, discovered by William Herschel in 1788. It lies roughly 12.5 million light-years from Earth and is undergoing a vigorous burst of star formation across its structure, giving it a patchy, knotted appearance in images.
