Caldwell 2, also known as the Bow-Tie Nebula or NGC 40, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Cepheus, discovered by the German-British astronomer William Herschel in 1788. It formed from the outer layers of a dying star shed into space, and its central star is an unusually hot remnant of Wolf-Rayet type, one of the hottest stellar cores known in a planetary nebula.
