William Anders was an American NASA astronaut and United States Air Force officer who served as lunar module pilot on Apollo 8 in December 1968, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon. During that mission Anders took the photograph known as Earthrise, showing the Earth rising above the lunar horizon, which became one of the most widely reproduced images in history and is often credited with helping shape the modern environmental movement. Anders later served as United States ambassador to Norway and as chairman of General Dynamics.
