Walter Cunningham was an American NASA astronaut and former United States Marine Corps fighter pilot who served as lunar module pilot on Apollo 7 in October 1968, the first crewed flight of the Apollo program following the fatal Apollo 1 launch pad fire. The eleven-day Earth-orbit mission successfully tested the redesigned Apollo command and service module and was considered essential to restoring confidence in the program before crewed lunar missions could proceed. It was Cunninghams only spaceflight.
