Vladimir Shatalov was a Soviet cosmonaut who commanded three Soyuz missions between 1969 and 1971, including Soyuz 4, which performed the first docking of two crewed Soviet spacecraft in orbit with Soyuz 5, and the crew transferred between the two vehicles by spacewalk. Shatalov later led cosmonaut training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center for many years, shaping the preparation of subsequent generations of Soviet and Russian cosmonauts.
